Finn's Fight

We met Finn in December of 2018 and were excited to learn about his favorite things - lego, super heroes (especially Batman) and playing with his older brother, Declan. When Finn was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, he and his brother started sleeping in Mom and Dad’s room. They referred to their bedroom as “the room we used to sleep in.” We knew that making over the boys rooms would mean more rest and healing for Finn, but would also impact the entire house.

We prefer bunk beds with stairs for younger kids, as they make it a little easier to navigate to the top bunk. A twin over full also means that a parent can bunk down with the kiddos, without falling out of bed, if someone needs extra hugs.

Since Finn and Declan decided to share their bedroom, we transformed their additional room into a playroom for dreaming, building legos and incorporated a secret fort hideout. Our friends at Stikwood donated our rustic wood wainscot that surrounds the room in Charcoal finish.

Converting an IKEA platform bunk into a play fort required some sketches, an incredibly patient painter (who sanded down the entire bed and painted it Sherwin Williams Grizzle Grey , and mattress style pillows - for an extra cozy nap space. Our amazing team at The Drapery Company created sofa cushions for the base and drapes that could be tied up or rolled down for secret fort meetings. And our super durable fabric was donated by Revolution Fabrics - The perfect weight and thickness for fort walls, but also stain resistant and easy to clean!

We designed new closet doors with shiplap siding which were donated thanks to Kayu Kayan. We painted them with a high gloss finish. These doors completely transformed the room and allowed better access to the new closet and interior toy storage.

The boys were so excited to see their new space and the sofa fort was a huge hit. Seeing Finn and Declan with such big smiles on their face really shows how design impacts lives. We are so proud to be a part of Savvy Giving By Design and how we are changing the meaning of #gotoyourroom
