6 Ways to Create a Bedroom Sanctuary
Colors can impact not just the way we feel, but also how we react to certain situations. They can heal, energize and soothe our emotional health, so in the bedroom I always recommend keeping your color scheme light and soft. Blues and soft neutrals allow for a calming energy. Tying the palette of the exterior (an ocean view for example) helps bring the palette together. Since not all of us have an ocean view, bringing the soft colors of nature into our space is a great way to create a restful and inviting space.
Nothing says sanctuary like a beautiful bedroom with lush linens and your comfiest pillows. Worth splurging on, the mattress is the foundation to your restful and full night of sleep. We love the Sleep Number Series mattresses as well as the Waldorf Astoria mattress collection for extra comfy dreamy spaces. A silk pillowcase on your favorite pillow is a luxurious touch that’s kind to your sleepy face!
This is definitely the room for soft lighting, dimmer switches and bedside lamps or sconces with warm soft light temperature. We love the 2700K-3000K LED bulbs for ambiance in the bedroom. Layers of lighting are important to create the perfect relaxation zone. We look to light the space with recessed lighting, accentuate with decorative ceiling fixtures and light the nightstands for reading with elegant lamps.
Textures and throws are one of our favorite touches for accentuating the coziness and warmth of a sleep space. Soft and plush area rugs for your morning toes to sink into are a great way to start the day. Layered bedding envelops the senses. Throws (the grown up version of your favorite blankie) are perfect for travelling from reading chair to chaise to curling up in bed with a favorite book or most recent Netflix binge worthy show.
There are all kinds of rules about how you should position your bed (just google it!), but sometimes the room dictates the wall the bed should lie on due to architecture, room layout and door positions. Wherever your bed falls, I focus on accentuating the view. What do you see when you first wake? If it’s beautiful art, soft window treatments in a calming color palette or a view of the ocean (lucky you!) then you are on the right path. If your view is to a neighboring house wall, consider adding foliage outside that will create not just a sense of privacy, but an outdoor environment that relates to the interior.
We all have clutter in our lives, both physical and emotional. Organizing and removing clutter from your sleeping space is a great way to bring a sense of peace. Utilize cabinetry and storage baskets to organize your clutter in a visually pleasing way. Bonus points for adding texture with your baskets! Clear your night stands and use them for a beautiful book, aromatherapy diffuser, frames of your favorite people and soft lighting. No blue light allowed (electronics)!
