Swann House Phase 1: The Discover

When one of our favorite clients sent us a photo of the new home he was planning to purchase, we were more than just a little excited. The home was built in 1926 - and our design brains (having recently watched Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby) were filled with all of the design, drama and extravagance of that period.

We did some research on the home and realized that although the date was perhaps appropriate for infusing art deco drama, detailed millwork, and geometric patterns with gold inserts; the home itself was certainly more traditionally appointed.

While the original space was graced with good bones, it felt surprisingly heavy and dark thanks to a lack of ceiling lighting in many rooms and light-blocking shutters. Several rounds of previous renovation were evident throughout the home. Casing details and crown molding changed size and design, from room to room. Dated wallpaper was peeling in several areas, and when the demo began, the walls had layer upon layer of paint, stucco, drywall and sometimes plaster.

We began our research in earnest, and realized that while our visions of the Roaring 20s included wild parties and inspired decor, the reality was that in Tampa, Florida, prohibition was in full effect during this period. Of course we thought it would be appropriate to sample some of the best ‘prohibition style’ cocktails of the era. With the help from the peeps at The Manual, our office favorites are the French 75 and the Gin Rickey (perfect for Summer in Florida - prohibition or not).

We learned this would be a frequent occurrence during the remodel of a home from the 20s. Rabbit holes for days.

Another notable Tampa staple that opened in 1926 included the Tampa Theatre. It was designed by John Eberson and is one of Tampa’s most iconic buildings, being named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. We felt like this historical home was in good company. But we had a long way to go…

Despite previous renovations, the home has kept some of the original details, such as exposed brick walls throughout the kitchen.
