Swann House Phase 3: Design

INSPIRATION + DESIGN

Inspiration came from the unique design of the original home, historical records of the area in the 1920s, views to nature in the park and intriguing wallpaper patterns layered with bold fabrics. The original green tile roof had to be replaced, but to pay homage to the original exterior, we brought greens into the home in many areas. Materials used include brass and other metal finishes, dark wood tones, black and white stone mosaics and deep green velvets.

Once the plans for the renovation are finalized and the construction is underway, it’s time to get furniture and the soft finishings of the home finalized and ordered. We created vision boards for each space and wanted to really get the feel of each room while the framing was still being put up.

We put each presentation board in the room, along with the floorplans, to show a glimpse of how the vision would transform the space. Exposed bricks and framing, concrete subfloor and dust (so much dust) make it harder to convey a space during a renovation. To help with this we printed and placed each board within the rooms of the home.

Living room

The family room needed to be both comfortable and inviting. The dark wood finishes, the perfect compliment to the newly refinished wood flooring. We loved incorporating fabulous and intriguing fabrics for pillows, while utilizing stain resistant fabrics for the sectional. Perfect for dogs and a busy home.

DINING ROOM

The dining room is often the heart of the home. This one sits immediately adjacent to the kitchen and the foyer and from the beginning we envisioned a dramatic room, with layers of pattern and texture. A large round table, perfect for entertaining and conversation, paired with velvet dining chairs and fabulous wallpaper will bring this dining room to life.

sunroom

With expansive windows and views to the entire park on Swann Circle, the sunroom had to be a gathering space, a bar, and offer lots of seating with a view. Envisioning this space as the perfect place for both early morning coffee and a late night cocktail, we created a custom banquette, with commercial velvet fabric and channel tufting in the back. Other seating can be pulled up to the table as a conversation place or faced toward the park to take in the view. The perfect leather swivel and fuzzy ottoman placed by the fireplace completes the room. For those cozy nights by the fireplace (in Florida)!

With stained glass being prevalent in the late 1890s and early 1900s, the homeowner had a vision for a feature in the sunroom that included referencing the 1926 architecture of the home and honoring the period during which it was built. The stained glass styles from this period were influenced by both the Arts and Crafts period and the movement of architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright. Linear designs with geometric forms and simple combinations of transparent glass are combined with earth tones of gold, brown and amber. Reeded glass and green accent colors were added for visual interest and a reference to the surrounding landscape and original green clay roof.

master suite

The master bedroom and bathroom area was completely reconfigured in the new layout for the home, giving us the opportunity to design a layout that was both expansive and cosy. The master suite design included refinished, original wood floors and new windows, creating a blank canvas for us to create a beautiful design aesthetic. Rich dark colors, black out window treatments, textured wallpaper and custom cabinetry are all part of this moody and masculine space.

guest + powder bath

Plumbing design research during a remodel can often be a convoluted part of the process, but with a house that is almost a century old, the challenges are compounded. Once we reconfigured the spacing in the room, we had to find both storage solutions and a funcitonality with in a small space. We solve the storage with a beautiful linen closet that fit perfectly in the space. With storage taken care of we could choose a console style vanity that spoke to the history of the home. We added mixed metal components, millwork wainscotting and leafy adventurous wallpaper to finish out the space.

flamingos

If you’ve been watching our designs for more than a minute you’ll know that we’re pretty obsessed with wallpaper at Ponton Interiors. In fact, when we find one we love, we will hold it (sometimes for a couple of years) until we find the perfect project. Cue the flamingos. Nothing more to say!
